Sunday Slouching

Some more Dr No sketches..this does not look like Sean Connery...but unless I take out my ruler and spend an hour on each drawing I don't think I'll be able to capture his likeness. My observation is not that developed yet.
Some Loomis head drawings...note to self: after drawing a page like this, draw it from memory..because I don't think these are sticking in my head yet.

Selection of some 1 minute drawings with a brown crayola pencil.

2 untimed poses"

Another..even slower drawing, digging into my memory of how Loomis uses lines to describe form...doesn't look like a Loomis drawing, but I do like it.
I then tried to draw the pose from another angle ..using the power of my tiny brain! I like some of the markmaking I did here. I think it's a great exercise that I'll be doing more often from now on.

Dr No Movie Sketches

Sketching from Dr. No (the James Bond flick). God..people in the 60s were so freakin' stylish! Gotta throw in some loomis studies since it would be a nice way to approach drawing a couple of Bond stills.

EDIT: As I said, I went ahead and did some quick studies of Loomis before doing another little session of Dr No drawings. Gotta say,I never get the likeness of the actors. But that's also not really my focus. My focus is drawing heads using the loomis structure thingie, and also getting better at using a pencil again. I've been way to accustomed to drawing digitally (and my wrist hurts because of it). So trying to level the playfield a bit :D

Loomis drawings below:

Back to Dr. No:

Posemaniacs + Cafe Sketches

Drawing outside is challenging! People are in constant motion, so you can't really draw purely observational. In a lot of cases you'll have to refer to what you know and just use what you see as the source of inspiration.

This morning I sat along a window where people were passing through the shop. So as soon as I looked at my sketchbook to put down my first line they were already gone.
Instead I tried to just observe them and make mental notes, and then try to do something based on those mental notes. I really don't know what I'm doing, which is why I should do it more often :P Remember the 10000 bad drawings rule!

And here are some posemaniacs 90 second drawings from 2 nights ago... it was actually a bad session...I think I've been doing those posemaniac sketches too often recently, and the brain just kinda becomes lazy then since there's no new input of information or new challenge.

1 min gestures + People Sketching

I got up early this morning with a sore wrist, so I decided to do some traditional pencil sketches to warm up. I drew quite small in an A4 sketchbook and really liked the results! Must draw smaller more often!

After work we went to Cafe en Seine for some coffee/light dinner and people sketching!

Loomis + 30 second gestures

Couple of heads

There's a reason why I'm focusing on drawing heads...I'm pretty bad at it. These were sketches from a movie...used the construction method and failed horribly. I then started to draw larger for the 2 last heads without construction and they turned out better. Nothing like the reference though :P

LIFE DRAWING : Sol Art Gallery Long Poses

Starting out with 10 x 1 minute poses

Followed by 3  x 30 mins one long pose (mostly a lying pose).

ANGLE #1: (picture above right) Man, this angle drive me crazy...made me feel like taking out the ruler because the shapes are so abstract at such an extreme foreshortening.

ANGLE #2: Better angle, but still very abstract and the only part of the head visible was the brows and part of the nose. Did 2 quick-ish attempts and moved on :P
ANGLE #3: This was the pose I decided to settle on. Tried some rendering with HB.

So for the last 30 mins I did a more dynamic drawing (of a lying pose..talk about contradiction). I have to say I really made up most of the light and guessed what the muscles would look like. It would really be nice to work from a model with a strong lightsource (click image to enlarge).

BONUS : I also did some drawings before I went life drawing at St. Stephens Green and the bus stop.

Michael Hampton + Long Pose

Tomorrow I'll be joining the long pose life drawing session in Dublin again. For today's study I looked at how Michael Hampton approaches the head. No surprise he uses the same construction and measurements as Loomis.

These studies are from his book which I highly recommend buying if you are serious about drawing the human figure LINK.

I then drew heads based on some poses from my usual reference sites.
And a long pose, focussing on construction and using line to describe form.
